Storm Bella leaves hundreds of homes in Ireland without power

Hundreds of homes in Ireland have lost power as Storm Bella hits the country.

Most of the outages occur off the west coast of Ireland, with failures reported in parts of Mayo, Sligo, Donegal and Kerry. Roscommon is also affected.

In Kerry there are homes without electricity in Gurranebane, while in Mayo homes in Newport, Ballinrobe, Crossmolina, Knockaphunta, Windsor, Turlough Road and Moy.

The Sligo areas affected include Oakfield and Collooney, while Milford and Buncrana in Donegal are also experiencing outages.

Power is not expected to be restored in many of the areas until the early hours of tomorrow.

Yellow wind advisories have been issued to eight counties ahead of a freezing night that will send mercury plummeting.

Meanwhile, there are weather alerts for much of the country today and tomorrow.

Met Eireann issued a yellow snow / ice status warning for Cavan, Monaghan, Donegal, Longford, Louth, Leitrim, Roscommon and Sligo, effective until 7 a.m. tomorrow morning.

It says: “Winter rains today (Sunday) and tonight with some possible accumulations. Risk of icy sections on untreated surfaces.”

There is also a wind advisory for Donegal, Galway, Mayo, Sligo, Clare, Cork, and Kerry.

Instead until 2pm tomorrow, it says: “Tonight (Sunday) until tomorrow (Monday), the northwesterly winds associated with Storm Bella (named after the UK Met Office), drifting north During the night, they will reach average speeds of 50 to 65 km / h with gusts of 90 to 110 km / h, the winds will be stronger in exposed areas and on higher ground.

“With the combination of strong winds, high waves and forecast storm surge, there is a risk of coastal flooding.”

In Northern Ireland there is a snow and ice advisory for Antrim, Armagh, Down, Fermanagh, Tyrone and Derry from the UK Met Office.
