Meanwhile, the coordinated launch of a vaccine to fight Covid-19 beings today throughout the EU.
Three countries – Germany, Hungary and Slovakia – began administering the vaccine just hours after receiving their first shipments of the Pfizer BioNTech vaccine yesterday.
Preparations are underway to start vaccinating people here in Ireland on Wednesday after the arrival of 10,000 doses of the vaccine.
Starting next week, health authorities are expected to receive around 40,000 weekly doses.
Professor Philip Nolan of the National Public Health Emergency Team – NPHET – pointed out that the arrival of the vaccine yesterday coincided with the record of the highest number of infections.
The Health Department previously confirmed that six more people had died with Covid-19 and 1,296 new cases had been reported.
Professor Nolan said the arrival of the vaccines was a ray of hope, but the latest Covid figures are a reminder of the hard work required to suppress the virus until the vaccine provides protection for people.
