Roscommon won the Connacht Minor Soccer Championship after a three-point victory over Sligo in horrible conditions at Claremorris.
In a game greatly affected by the wind and rain, Sligo failed to score for nearly all of the 60 minutes and scored his 1-02 count in the final stages of normal time.
The Rossies led by four points at halftime when Oisin Cregg and Conor Hand scored from the game, while Eoin Colleran and Hand converted from free.
The second half was set for a comeback from Yeats County, as they had the advantage of the wind, if such a thing existed, but for a long time it didn’t seem to materialize.
The first marker of the second period was crucial, as Roscommon found the net through Shane Walsh from close range.
Hand then shot the point for the day with a good kick and Sligo finally gave the scoreboard trouble with five minutes to go via a point from Canice Mulligan.
Simon McKeon followed that up with a point of his own and then Dylan Walsh’s long-range free kick found its way to the net as the 60-minute mark was reached.
Roscommon survived three minutes in injury time to win 1-05 to 1-02 in a game that offered a reminder why late December is not an optimal time to conclude competitions of any level.
