The National Public Health Emergency Team has reported two other deaths of Covid-19 patients. This brings the total number of deaths in the pandemic to 2,194.
Nphet also reported 1,025 confirmed cases of the disease, bringing the total number of cases in the Republic to 84,098.
The number of daily cases of Covid-19 has passed the 1,000 mark for the first time in two months.

Medical Director Dr Tony Holohan confirmed that the new British variant of SARS-CoV-2 has been identified in Ireland by whole genome sequencing at the National Virus Reference Laboratory at UCD.
NVRL Director Dr. Cillian de Gascun said the sample tested was from last weekend, so the virus variant was likely acquired around December 12-14.
“More tests in the coming days and weeks will establish to what extent it is present here. In the meantime, it is vitally important that we all stay home, avoid social contact, and avoid all kinds of non-essential travel. “
“It is particularly important that those who have arrived from the UK strictly isolate themselves for a full 14 days after arrival. They should not interact with others, visit others, socialize, or go shopping.
Testing recent arrivals
The HSE is making arrangements to test the newcomers from the UK, Dr Holohan said.
On Christmas Eve, there were 50 confirmed cases at Dublin’s Beaumont Hospital, 26 in Letterkenny and 22 in Tallaght.
There were 1,137 free hospital beds on Christmas Eve morning, a time of year when occupancy is traditionally low. Covid-19 patients accounted for more than 10 percent of all intensive care patients and 62 intensive care beds were empty.
Monaghan’s GP Shane Corr, who spent Christmas Day working after-hours services in the Northeast, said they were inundated with patients with symptomatic viruses.
He said it was particularly notable that multiple members of a household developed symptoms.
Dr. Corr urged people to stay home for the next two weeks at a minimum.
