New restriction requirements for arrivals from Great Britain

As the upward trend in Covid-19 cases continues, businesses and families are preparing for the imposition of stricter restrictions beginning on Christmas Eve.

Both the Taoiseach and the medical director have expressed great concern about infection rates.

Meanwhile, the Health Service Executive updated the restriction requirements for people entering the country from England, Scotland and Wales.

With the new strain of the virus raising fears of further transmission, the HSE improved its public health requirements for people arriving from Britain since December 8.

They must now isolate themselves for the full 14 days from the date of arrival. That means staying in your room, regardless of negative test results.

Tánaiste Leo Varadkar said that the new Covid variant is likely already in Ireland.

Yesterday saw 970 additional Covid-19 infections and 13 deaths were announced.

During the last seven days, 4,478 cases were reported, 110% more than the previous week.

Dr. Tony Holohan, medical director, described that trajectory as cause for great concern.

He said that this “extraordinary” infection rate would significantly increase the risk associated with intergenerational social mixing during Christmas.

He urged people to rethink their Christmas plans, especially when it comes to visiting vulnerable people.

Dr. Holohan also cautioned that it will take time for the vaccine to take full effect.

Meanwhile, many companies will be preparing to lower the blinds, once again, starting tomorrow.
