A childhood friend of the cartel boss, Daniel Kinahan, remained in garda custody tonight after he and a teenage relative were arrested for a robbery of 20,000 euros in cash in transit.
uring the robbery, a member of the security staff was collecting a box of cash from a retail outlet on Thomas Street in Dublin at around 12:45 pm on Tuesday last week. As he was returning to a security van, a lone man armed with a hammer approached him and threatened him.
This man took a box of money from the security man before fleeing the scene by bicycle.
No one was physically injured in the raid and none of the cash has been recovered.
Kevin Street gardai started a big investigation and spent dozens of hours examining good quality CCTV.
This led to this morning’s arrest operation in which a man in his 30s was arrested, as well as a 19-year-old man who is a relative of his.
The 19-year-old was later released without charge and a file will be prepared for the Director of the Public Ministry.
Both are from the south center of the city and Gardai knows them for their participation in the cocaine trade in the town.
“The older man arrested would have dealt with Kinahan a bit when they were growing up in the Oliver Bond area and they were quite friendly.
“But there is nothing to say anymore that they are closely associated and the crime for which he has been arrested has all the characteristics of someone desperate to pay off a drug debt. It was pretty reckless, ”said a senior source.
He was arrested when officers conducted four dawn searches: three at downtown locations to the south and one at Clondalkin.
“A search operation was conducted on three properties in the Dublin 8 area and one property in the Clondalkin area on Dublin 22. These searches were conducted by gardaí from the Serious Crimes Unit of DMR South Central with the assistance of Kevin Street and Kilmainham Gardaí ”. said a Garda spokesman.

The event comes the same week that Daniel Kinahan emerged as being sued by a boxing manager in the US under organized crime laws.
It is alleged that he and the sports management company MTK Global signed boxing champion Joseph Diaz (28) earlier this year while he was still under contract and offered him $ 100,000 (€ 82,000) up front.
The boxer’s former manager, Moses Heredia, has now filed a civil action for the firm, along with his company Heredia Boxing Management.
Various allegations are made in the claim, including that MTK is “using and abusing United States law” to continue an alleged “money laundering operation” while receiving funds from Kinahan.
