Ryanair and Aer Lingus are working with the Department of Foreign Affairs to provide repatriation flights from the UK to bring the Irish home today.
Ryanair is providing two repatriation flights.
Speaking at Shannon Airport, Ryanair Chief Executive Eddie Wilson said: “We think there is much more demand than two flights for people who are stranded in the UK to go home for Christmas.”
“We will work with the government on that.”
The airline believes there will be demand for Irish people who traveled home before the travel ban was imposed to return to the UK after Christmas.
Wilson said: “There are a lot of people in Ireland who will have to go back to the UK after Christmas.
“We are going to be looking at a series of one-way flights back to the UK after the Christmas holidays.
“Clearly we will have a hard time flying in one direction.”
