The medical director has asked people to reduce their contacts and avoid crowds as we enter Christmas week.
Yesterday, 527 new cases of Covid-19 were reported, bringing the total number of confirmed cases to 78,776.
The Health Department was also notified of another five coronavirus-related deaths, bringing the total death toll to 2,154.
Dr. Tony Holohan said that all the key indicators of the severity of the disease give rise to constant and constant concern.
In a statement, he said Ireland was heading into a week of exceptionally risky intergenerational and household mixes and called on people across the country to act responsibly.
Dr. Holohan said it’s never too late to cut back, cancel plans, or avoid a crowd.
In a post on Twitter, he urged people to stay home and stay away from restaurants and pubs.

Yesterday’s figures saw 191 new Covid-19 cases in Dublin, 54 in Cork, 44 in Donegal, 32 in Wexford and 27 in Kilkenny, with the remaining cases spread across 20 other counties.
There were 212 Covid-19 patients in Irish hospitals as of 8pm last night, according to the latest HSE figures, ten more than in the previous 24 hours.
Most of these patients were at Beaumont Hospital (38), Letterkenny (26), and Kilkenny (22).
There were also 114 suspected cases in hospitals, of which the majority (22) were at St James Hospital.
Twenty-nine confirmed Covid-19 patients were being treated in intensive care, of which 18 were on ventilators.
Most of the intensive care patients are in Dublin, four in Tallaght, three in Beaumont and three in Mater.
As of last night, there were also 27 intensive care beds available.
