A secret group on Facebook that was previously connected to a party member “is not of interest to the party,” according to a Sinn Féin TD.
ublin TD Eoin O’Broin said the secret group came to the party’s attention more than a year ago and that a party member was connected to the group at the time.
However, the party asked the person to “disengage” from the site and the party tried to shut down the group.
“It was originally an open Facebook page and we actually thought Facebook had closed it when we were informed earlier this year. It became an exclusive group for members, “he said in Saturday with Katie Hannon where RTÉ.
“When this came to our attention more than a year ago and we investigated it, there was a party member who was connected to this site.
“We urged that person to unlink from the site and they did so because it violated social media guidelines.”
He said the group “is not in the interest of the party.”
“This is not in the interest of our party, this is not what we want but it is not the only problem we have on social media,” said Deputy O’Broin.
The Irish Times reported today that the group sees criticism of the party’s opponents, including other members of the Dáil.
He added that people should not be allowed to create social media pages that include the names of other people or groups without their consent.
“Our opinion is very simple, people should not be allowed to create Facebook sites or social networking sites on behalf of other people or other organizations without their permission or consent. We do not approve of any of the comments that have been reported, we want this to be closed, “he added.
