Comedian Bill Bailey has won this year’s Strictly Come Dancing.
The 55-year-old, who competed with his professional dance partner Oti Mabuse, is the oldest contestant to lift the coveted shiny ball trophy.
He said that winning “feels surreal, it feels extraordinary, it feels wonderful. I never thought we would get this far. “
“I had the most extraordinary teacher, the most extraordinary dancer, who believed in me from the beginning and found something in me, turned me into this, into a dancer.”
Mabuse said: “I think you are amazing, extraordinary.
“You put your heart in everything, you put your soul in everything. You are in your world but I love your world …
“Thank you for being a friend, a father figure to me, a brother and for this,” he said of the glitter ball.
The live finale began with reference to a “difficult day”, after millions of people scrapped the Christmas plans.
The finalists and professionals participated in a sequence to open the last show of the cycle.
Co-host Tess Daly told millions of viewers: “If ever people needed to cheer up, it’s now.
“After another difficult day, we will do our best to keep you entertained with an unforgettable night of dancing.”
The BBC continuity announcer said Strictly had brought viewers together over difficult months.
“In a year that has kept us apart, whether you’re watching Tyne and Wear, Devon, Berkshire or Lincolnshire, we’re all watching BBC One together,” he said.
Four couples, HRVY and Janette Manrara, Bill Bailey and Oti Mabuse, Jamie Laing and Karen Hauer, and Maisie Smith and Gorka Marquez, competed to lift the shiny ball trophy.
The Duchess of Cornwall praised Strictly Come Dancing for “uplifting the nation” when it appeared on the show’s finale.
Camilla spoke about the joy of the BBC One program, in a pre-recorded clip.
“I think it has lifted our spirits, it has lifted the spirits of the whole country,” he said.
“I am very excited, I know who I will vote for.
“I would like, on behalf of everyone watching Strictly, to give a huge thank you to everyone who has been involved in this production in this particularly difficult year.
“You have given everyone a lot of pleasure and have elevated the nation.”
Judge Craig Revel Horwood, known for his sharp tongue, referenced the Prime Minister’s announcement, following the rapid spread of the new variant of the coronavirus.
“In light of the recent news, I have decided that I am going to be positive. You may not recognize me, ”he said.
