Ireland’s weather is forecast to turn icy over the next few days and into Christmas Day.

Met Eireann forecasts that temperatures will drop below freezing overnight and remain cold during the day as we approach the end of years.

Forecasters are predicting some thunderstorms this weekend, but once they pass, it will be a mixed weekend before the freezing weather hits Sunday night.

Monday will be the first subzero night and the following days will be similar, if not colder.

A forecaster from Met Eireann said: “Outbreaks of rain and drizzle will clear to the east Monday morning and the rest of the day will be dry with bright or sunny spells.”

“Evening highs 6 to 9 degrees with light to moderate breeze from the west.

“Cold and largely dry Monday night with long clear spells for many. However, erratic rains or sleet can affect the southern coast counties, and there may be some light showers near the northwest coast.

“Minimum temperatures of -1 to +2 degrees with frost and risk of frost. Light breezes from the south or variable.
There is a bit more uncertainty than usual in the forecast as we move into the middle of the week. The main uncertainty concerns a low pressure system expected to follow towards Ireland from the southwest on Tuesday.

“The main uncertainty is as to how far north the rain and wind associated with this system will reach and whether or not it will affect our coasts.

Both the timing and extent of rainfall are still unclear at this stage, but southern parts of the country are more at risk of seeing some rain or possibly some sleet (depending on the timing) and strong winds later Tuesday at Wednesday. second

“Both Tuesday and Wednesday will be cold, with maximum daytime temperatures of only 3 to 7 degrees, with a probability of frost on both nights.”

Christmas Eve and Christmas Day are expected to be very cold, but the chances of a white Christmas are not that high.

The Met Eireann forecaster added: “Christmas Eve looks cold with spells of sunshine and a lot of dry weather, but also some rain.

“Higher temperatures of 4 to 7 degrees with light to moderate northwesterly breezes. Mostly dry conditions are likely to prevail on Christmas Eve night with spells clear. Lows of -1 to + 3 degrees with frost and risk of frost.”

“At the moment, Christmas Day is shaping up to be a mostly dry day with some intervals of sunshine or sunshine. However, there is the possibility that some rain will develop in the Northwest later in the day.”
