A man who was part of a large crowd who tried to break into a Dublin nightclub last year has been jailed for 18 months.
Moses Lulendo (19) joined the group of men, some with their faces covered, who tried to push the doormen at the Lost Lane nightclub on Grafton Street in the city center on July 7, 2019.
The Dublin Circuit Criminal Court heard that some of the other men present had an ax and that a gasoline bomb made from a bottle of Hennessy brandy was also found near the scene.
Garda detective Sarah Barry told Pieter Le Vert, in the indictment, that the mob was trying to break into the nightclub to get revenge on the people they believed were inside and were linked to a previous attack on a Lulendo relative. .
Retaliation
The week before, a car occupied by this man and another had been attacked. Det Garda Barry said the mob would go to the club that night in retaliation.
He said that after 17 years working downtown, he had never seen anything like this incident.
Lulendo, of Gardiner Place in Dublin City, pleaded guilty to committing a violent disorder at Adam Court, Dublin 2.
In a victim impact report, a doorman at the site said that he had worked for more than a decade in security and that this incident was the most vulnerable he had felt in that time. He said he grew up in Belfast and was well aware of the devastation petrol pumps could cause.
He said he has since stopped working in security as a result of these events and continues to suffer from flashbacks and panic attacks.
Lulendo’s 16 previous convictions include public order crimes committed on July 16, 2019, nine days after these events.
Dave Fleming, on defense, said Lulendo was not a gang leader at night and was not armed.
Judge Elma Sheahan said the defendant was part of a large group of men who had their faces covered. He said he was open to Lulendo leaving if he was surprised by the level of violence from “the mob,” some of whom had brought weapons capable of causing serious injury.
On Thursday he sentenced him to an 18-month prison term.
Lulendo also pleaded guilty to two thefts of iPhones on a playground on October 29, 2017. The judge imposed a sentence of 26 months but suspended the last eight months on the condition that he serve 12 Probation Service. months.
