A Mayo man in his 20s was extradited from the United States to face a dangerous driving charge that resulted in death.
Francis Carr, based in Cappaghduff, Tourmakeady, Co Mayo, was allegedly the driver of a car that crashed in 2017, killing two passengers.
Orla O’Malley, 18, of Cross, Co Mayo, and Sean Thomas Halloran, a 20-year-old from Clonbur, Co Galway, were killed when the car they were riding in collided with a wall near Tourmakeady in June of that. year.
Carr left Ireland after the accident and has not returned to the country since.
He was arrested on the foot of an extradition warrant in the United States last June and has been detained by American authorities so far.
He was extradited overnight and arrested on arrival at Dublin airport this morning.
Gardaí took him to Castlebar, where he appeared before today’s session of the District Court.
Sergeant Margaret O’Connor gave evidence of having arrested Mr. Carr at 6:49 a.m. M.
Mayo State Attorney Vincent Deane told the court that the Director of the Public Ministry had led the trial on the prosecution in the matter.
The defendant’s attorney did not request bail and said his client was willing to remain in custody.
A request for free legal aid was granted.
