Love came in time for a DART director who was “totally shocked” when her boyfriend proposed to her in front of a crowd at Pearse Station.
aula Carbó Zea was directing his train to the station when he began to see signs on the usual platform signs.
Paula’s boyfriend, Conor, had come up with a romantic plan to propose to Paula on the platform.
Conor, in collusion with Irish Rail, erected “Will you marry me?” posters at the station as a crowd gathered to witness the commotion.
“First of all, I saw big white boards, since they can’t be read from afar, but as I got closer, I saw the message ‘Do you want to marry me?’ and then I saw a lot of people on the platform and Conor standing there with the flowers and the ring.
“My first reaction was that I was going to kill him,” Paula joked, adding that it was “incredible, with all the passengers applauding. It was so nice, “he said speaking to RTÉ News.
Paula said she was greeted by “our song” on the station intercom when she disembarked from the train with a nervous Conor admitting that once he saw Paula coming in, “everything flowed from there.”
Paula admitted that thoughts about her wedding day weren’t the first thing that came to mind.
“First of all, I was thinking ‘I’m not done because I had two stations to go, what’s going to happen to my train?’ but then someone told me that another driver would take over, “Paula, newly engaged, told FM104 this morning.
“He organized a lot of things and moved a lot of pieces to get it done,” Paula admitted, adding that her Irish Rail colleagues were “brilliant” in helping Conor perform his grand gesture.
Conor admitted that he was so nervous beforehand that he was “jumping off the platform to ease the tension”, but he had nothing to worry about as Paula happily accepted his proposal.
Iarnród Eireann tweeted a congratulatory message to Paula and Conor and also posted pictures of the interior of the DART that were recorded especially for the proposal.
“Paula’s DART driver and colleagues from Pearse station ensured that an inspector and a relief driver were ready to take the DART onward, anticipating that Paula would stay in Pearse to celebrate,” Irish Rail said in a statement.
“The station staff had music requested by Conor to mark the moment, and both customers and staff were delighted to share such a brilliant moment in such a challenging year.”
They also added that they were grateful for the work of Ms Carbó and her colleagues during the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic.
The occasion was first captured by midwife Clodagh Maher, who tweeted that: “[I] I didn’t think anything could cheer me up after a busy 13-hour shift, and a gentleman proposes to his girlfriend who drives the incoming train at Pearse station. “
Paula thanked Ms. Maher for her video and responded to her tweet saying “Thank you [you] so much for sharing this moment. I was so surprised and excited at the same time. Thank you to everyone who participated in making this moment beautiful and perfect. “
