A CLOSE male associate of the Islamic State suspect, Lisa Smith, has been arrested for a brutal assault on a Garda woman.
The shocking incident occurred yesterday in Dundalk, Co Louth, when the man in his 30s was pulled over by Gardaí for using a mobile phone while driving.
The garda suffered a broken nose and serious injuries to the eye socket.
“This man set off and carried out a totally unprovoked attack when the Gardaí informed him that his vehicle would be impounded,” said a senior source.
“After being arrested, his violent behavior continued all the way back to the station and at the station.”
Earlier yesterday in the Dundalk area, a male officer was brutally assaulted while conducting a drug search on a vehicle.
He received injuries to his nose and lip in the incident. A man in his 30s was also arrested in connection with this.
Both suspects have been charged and are due to appear in court next month.
The violent attacks on the Gardaí occurred less than two weeks after two Gardaí in the same district were also victims of violent attacks.
On the night of December 5, a garda was allegedly attacked and hit in the head during a drug search, just hours after another officer was injured during a hit and run in the city.
A suspect has been charged in connection with the assault, but there have yet been no arrests in the hit-and-run case.
Lisa Smith was not present and was not involved in the assault on the women’s garda yesterday.
Ms Smith is due to go to trial in Special Criminal Court in January 2022 on charges of belonging to the Islamic State terror group and financing of terrorism.
Ms Smith, who denies the charges, has not drawn Gardaí’s attention since she was released on bail after being charged with the crimes.
The former member of the Irish Defense Forces was arrested and charged with terrorist offenses after returning from Syria with her daughter last December.
