‘We thought we were playing against PSG’

Harlequins scrum half Danny Care responded to Munster’s criticism of his approach to Saturday’s Heineken Champions Cup clash, accusing the province of “diving in and complaining.”

Munster head coach Johann van Graan expressed his own unhappiness with what he called some “unacceptable” late tackles on his half Ben Healy in the home team’s 21-7 Group B win at Thomond Park.

Alex Dombrandt received a yellow card for a shoulder load on Healy, and the 21-year-old suffered an injury that has excluded him from Saturday’s trip to Clermont Auvergne.

“Clearly it was an opposition tactic to hit him late and certain things in the game are just unacceptable,” Van Graan said. “Now he got injured because of that.”

Speaking on the BBC’s Rugby Union Weekly podcast, Care shrugged off the suggestion that his team has overshot.

“It got quite physical. Our discipline disappointed us again and it was too much for us.

“There were a couple of 50-50 decisions against us, a couple of Irish linesmen, but we won’t say anything more than that.

“I heard everyone complain about the latest hits. Ask Mike Brown about the latest hits and why he didn’t come back on the field. He got knocked out. But none of it came out, and then we took a couple of yellow cards for it.

“You go after every 10. Everything we did to his 10 was not done to our players.

“We thought we were playing PSG a couple of times with so much rolling, diving and complaining.

“It’s a physical sport at times. Obviously they did better at the weekend, congratulations. We look forward to a rematch in January.

“I loved the game, it was annoying, energetic, England versus Ireland. It made me feel like I was back in a test environment.”
