A woman who stole 760,000 euros from an education authority and spent it on expensive bags and clothes has been jailed for two years.

Judge John Aylmer said that Tara Sweeney’s crimes were “systematic and premeditated” after she stole money from her employer, the Donegal Education Center. The 47-year-old woman pleaded guilty to stealing the cash over a six-year period.

However, the Donegal Circuit Court was told that many of the items were never removed from their packaging and left in a room in his home.

Ms. Sweeney was an account manager at the center from 2009 to 2015.

In 2015, a new company director became suspicious of the lack of large sums, an investigation was launched and Ms Sweeney, from The Glebe, Donegal Town, subsequently resigned from her position.

An accounting firm was drafted and found wire transfers to Ms Sweeney’s account totaling € 760,000.

Further investigation showed that Sweeney had spent much of the money on clothing, designer handbags, perfumes, and jewelry. Many of the recovered bags and clothing were never removed from their packaging, the court heard.

Ms. Sweeney’s attorney, Peter Nolan told the court that the case and his actions destroyed her life. He said he is selling his house and that earnings of between 60,000 and 70,000 euros will be refunded. Judge Aylmer said the crime deserved a three-year prison sentence, but would suspend the last twelve months.
