An elderly man tragically passed away after a car accident in Leitrim.
The heartbreaking incident happened in Killaneen, Ballinamore, around 11 a.m. on Tuesday.
The man in his 70s, who was the driver and the only person in the car, suffered serious injuries and was rushed to Cavan General Hospital. He was later pronounced dead.
A post mortem examination will take place at a later date.
A Garda spokesperson said: “The Gardaí is currently at the scene of a fatal single-vehicle traffic collision that occurred at approximately 11 am this morning, Tuesday, December 15, 2020, in Killaneen, Ballinamore, Co. Leitrim.
“The driver and sole occupant of the vehicle involved, a man in his 70s, suffered serious injuries and was taken to Cavan General Hospital. He was later pronounced dead. An autopsy will be performed at a later date.
“Forensic collision investigators are examining the scene and the road is closed with local detours.

“Gardaí is asking for any witnesses to this collision to come forward. Gardaí is also appealing to any road user who may have camera footage (including the dash cam) traveling in the area between 10:45 am and 10:00 am. 11:15 am to make this footage available for Gardaí.
“Anyone with any information is requested to contact Carrick at Shannon Garda Station at 071 965 0510, the Garda Confidential Line at 1800 666 111 or any Garda station.”
