Chicago gets behind ‘Mayo for Sam’ ahead of All-Ireland

With only days to go before the all-Ireland soccer final, union leaders in Chicago have voiced their support for May’s attempt to prevent Dublin from winning a sixth consecutive title.

The world-renowned slogan ‘Mayo for Sam’ has been displayed in one of the city’s iconic buildings, by the Chicago Federation of Labor.

Federation President Bob Reiter said links between the Windy City and Ireland’s windy west had prompted officials to display the slogan at the Prudential building in recent days.

Using lights on different floors to spell out the message, ‘May for Sam’ dominated the 41-story building.

Reiter said there was a very strong and noisy Irish contingent in the Chicago Labor movement and noted a particular presence of Mayo among heavy equipment operators working in the city.

The Federation is the coordinating organization for 300 unions in the area, representing around half a million workers.

Prudential Plaza will serve to show other messages of support to the footballers of Mayo in the coming days.

Reiter said that many Mayo exiles who would traditionally travel home for the final were limited in their travels by the Covid-19 pandemic.

He is in talks with elected officials to see how best to score a May victory in Chicago, should the team prevail over Dublin in Saturday’s decider.
