The new strain of Covid-19 found in London has yet to be detected in Ireland, according to NPHET’s Cillian De Gascun.

The health expert said that based on data available from the National Virus Reference Laboratory, there is no evidence that the new variant has reached Irish shores yet.

Medical virologist De Gascun tweeted: “Based on sequence data available from the National Virus Reference Laboratory, the UK’s new SARSCOV2 variant has not been detected in Ireland (ROI) to date.”

The new strain of the virus was revealed in the UK on Monday when London and much of southern England entered Level 3 restrictions.

UK Health Secretary Matt Hancock announced the worrying new development in the Commons.

Speaking on Monday, Hancock said: “In recent days, thanks to our world-class genomic capabilities in the UK, we have identified a new coronavirus variant that may be associated with the more rapid spread in southern England.

“Initial analysis suggests that this variant is growing faster than existing variants.”

During Monday’s meeting, Dr. Ronan Glynn said it was “too early at this stage” to talk about the new strand of Covid-19.
