Gardaí has warned against a “new trend on social media” involving people standing in front of oncoming traffic to joke with drivers.
The phenomenon, known as “ghost”, is “extremely irresponsible and poses a grave danger to participants” and to motorists, Garda headquarters said in a statement Monday.
The “ghost effect” usually involves the person lying on the road with a sheet over them to make oncoming cars stop or notice. The driver’s reaction is then filmed and uploaded to social media in the hope that it will go viral.
The Garda warning follows an incident in the south of the country in recent days in which a girl was injured by a vehicle while “ghost”, according to The Irish Times.
She was taken to the hospital where she spent several days receiving treatment for minor injuries to her back, torso and ankle.
“An Garda Síochána is urging people not to participate in this social media trend. Gardaí is particularly appealing to parents to educate their children on the dangers of participating in such activity and to highlight the importance of being seen while using Irish roads, ”the statement said.
