Paul Merson admits that he worries about the future of Leeds with the system they play in and doubts that Kalvin Phillips will be around for the long haul.

A promising start to life in the Premier League has now stalled. After scoring seven points in his first four games, the White clothes they have lost four of their last six games.

They fell 2-1 at home to West Ham on Friday night, having lost 3-1 to Chelsea the previous game. It means that Marcelo Bielsa’s men rank 14th in the top category standings, with 14 points from 11 games.

The alarm bells won’t be ringing too loud yet, as they are still eight points away from the drop zone. However, that is more due to the fact that the last three seem unable to win.

Elland Road’s outfit could easily be dragged into a downhill dogfight and should seek to remedy the situation.

Merson watched the way Bielsa set up his team against the Hammers and fears his style will cost them dearly.

“I was sitting and watching last night, and I was worried about Leeds,” he said on Sky Sports News. “Everybody is getting used to playing Leeds. It’s like playing [Said] Benrahma against Leeds, because they need players who can beat the players.

“Whoever can skip past players is going to play for that team on Saturday given against Leeds, or on Sunday or Monday. They play man to man, you pass your marker and you have a chance. “

England midfielder could have itchy feet

Leeds took the lead through a Mateusz klich penalty after six minutes but Tomas Soucek leveled affairs for David Moyes’s men. Angelo Ogbonna scored from another set piece in the 80th minute to settle the game.

It’s a worrying trend for the whole of Yorkshire struggling to defend set pieces.

And Merson questions whether England Phillips will want to continue playing a jersey style That seems destined for failure

Kalvin Phillips TEAMtalk

“All neutrals love to see Leeds play because you know it will be an open game, it will flow freely, there will be goals, but that is not good for Leeds.” “I look at Phillips, and he was talking upstairs with the guys before – you look at Phillips and you wonder how long he’s going to stay in Leeds.”

Leeds are next in action when they host Newcastle United on Wednesday 16 December.
