A pub in Co Waterford decided to stay closed during the All-Ireland Hurling final on Sunday with “the best interests of the parish at heart”.

Waterford and Limerick will meet in the Croke Park clash with a throw-in at 3.30pm and fears have been raised about possible fan meetings.

Crotty’s Inn in Lemybrien, Co Waterford tweeted: “Unfortunately, due to high demand and with the best interests of our parish in mind before Christmas, we have decided not to open this Sunday for the hurling finale. We will open on Monday, hopefully celebrating an all-Ireland win. Wouldn’t that be something? “

The news comes after Gardaí asked ferret fans to follow public health guidelines for Sunday’s game.

Deputy Commissioner, Police and Security, John Twomey said: “As a longtime GAA member and a former inter-county pitcher, I know how much it means to be in an all-Ireland final for the people of Limerick and Waterford, particularly after of this difficult year.

“We want this to be a great occasion for everyone, but we must all remember that Covid-19 does not take a day off even for a final in Ireland. Covid-19 is still with us. It is still spreading among our communities. There are people seriously ill and dying from Covid-19.

“Una Garda Síochána, together with GAA, we are committed to playing our role. We ask GAA supporters to continue to play their role by following public health guidelines and regulations.

“If you are somewhere to watch the game and there are too many people there, go away. Limit your contacts. Maintain social distancing. Wash your hands regularly. Wear a mask when appropriate. Remember, according to Nphet, yelling and singing can easily spread Covid-19. People need to keep these things in mind when making decisions about where to support their team.

“We want everyone to enjoy the occasion safely so that they, their families and support partners can have a happy and healthy Christmas and New Year.

“The vast majority of licensed establishments have been operating in accordance with public health regulations. It is essential that this is maintained. Those who are not compliant should be aware that we will take action, including compliance, to get them to comply. “
