Chatham Street Lad smashed a typically competitive Caspian Caviar Gold Cup to easily win at Cheltenham for eccentric trainer Mick Winters, who celebrated by rolling in the mud of the track winner’s venue live on ITV.

Winters cautioned that this unusual celebration was a possibility in the week when he said Tuesday: “I always said that if I ever had a winner in Cheltenham, I’d do like a pig and roll in mud. They say pigs are happiest when they’re covered in shit so I’ll go down and roll if this boy wins. “

He did more than win. The eight-year-old took the run from the penultimate fence below Darragh O’Keeffe and crossed 15 bodies above Midnight Shadow, with Benatar, Good Boy Bobby and Annie Mc following him home.

Winters, speaking after his downfall in the land of Cheltenham, said: “It was fabulous.”

On the winner, he added: “I would love to go to the festival with him. I will have to ask the owners but I think they will agree.”

Live reaction: ‘In that way it has to be a grade 1 performer’

That’s a Chatham Street Lad performance. In fact, it is so good that it is almost too good to be true. I don’t know what to do with it. He’s won that race in a time seven seconds faster than the 152-rated Raffles Rifle, which is 15 pounds more than him. If that way is to be believed, Chatham Street Lad is a Grade 1 artist.

O’Keeffe, delighted, said: “It was amazing. The only thing I thought might disappoint him was his jump a little bit, and he did it at times today.”

“It traveled like a dream, made some mistakes, but when I wanted it it was amazing.

“When Micky Winters comes to England, you have to take him seriously because when he has the ammunition he is able to train them. We thought he would run well, but we didn’t think he would.”

Winner 20-1 for Ryanair Chase

Chatham Street Lad, the first Irish-trained race winner since Sir Oj landed the award for Noel Meade in 2005, was having his first outing in Britain after a comfortable five-length win in Cork last month.

Paddy Power and Betfair Sportsbook presented the eight-year-old winner, who raced the Caspian Caviar with a 141 mark, at 20-1 for Ryanair Chase at the Cheltenham Festival.
