Seán O’Brien of Tipperary announced his retirement from inter-county hurling with immediate effect.
The Newport player retires with a 2019 senior all-Ireland winners medal and a 2006 all-Ireland minor title.
O’Brien’s last game for Tipperary’s senior team came in Munster’s semi-final loss to Limerick in Páirc Uí Chaoimh in early November.
In a statement, O’Brien confirmed his decision to withdraw from the Tipperary panel and paid a special tribute to manager Liam Sheedy and coach Tommy Dunne.
O’Brien wrote: “Having had the opportunity to shed and wear Tipperary’s blue and gold for the past 15 years, from juniors, under-21s, intermediates and seniors, culminating in the success of all of Ireland in 2019, the moment It is now I have the right to get away from the scene between counties.
“I’m so happy to know that I gave 100% every time I went out onto the field, where some days it worked better than others, but that’s the joy of our wonderful game.
“The camaraderie and friendships I have made along the way will stay with me for life and I will certainly miss the hustle and bustle in the locker room, especially on game day. I would like to thank all the players I played with and give my all. Thank you for all your support and unity throughout the years.
“To the various management teams at Tipperary, I sincerely thank you for your faith in me as a player. In particular, I would like to give a special mention to Tommy Dunne, who coached me throughout my career and instilled in me great faith and confidence. .
“I want to thank Liam Sheedy and the 2019 management team; we had an unforgettable year and all the joy it brought to the entire county and beyond. While we all did our best again this year, it was not.”
