Dundalk goalkeeper Gary Rogers has ended his football career after two decades of great success as a player.

Rogers began his career with Shelbourne in 1999, but it was with Dundalk that he really made his mark, helping the Lilywhites win four Premier Division titles, three FAI Cups and two Europa League group campaigns.

The 39-year-old also won the Premier Division, FAI Cup and Setanta Cup with Sligo Rovers and holds the record for the most European matches by an Irish league player.

Although he never played internationally, Rogers was twice called up to the Republic of Ireland team.

Rogers’ last domestic game turned out to be Dundalk’s FAI Cup final victory over Shamrock Rovers at Aviva Stadium.

He confirmed his retirement in a short statement on Twitter that read: “After 21 years I have packed my gloves for the last time.

“It has been an incredible journey full of ups and downs. I will not miss the sacrifices but I will miss the game.”
