An elementary school in Laois is partially closed until after Christmas due to a Covid-19 outbreak.
Holy Family Senior School in Portlaoise informed parents earlier this week that the school would close as of Thursday and would not return until after the Christmas break.
Classes will continue online but no students will return to school until January.
High school is where all students in grades three through six attend; Holy Family Middle School, serving infants through second class, will remain open.
A spokesperson said: “Holy Family Senior School is closed as of today (Thursday). It will reopen after Christmas. The HSE has ‘worked with the school, recognizing the need to close on the site as of today.’
“Education will continue online.”
It is not known how many students or teachers at the school have been infected with the coronavirus.
In the message to parents, the principal said his priority is to do “everything possible to keep others safe and well.”
