Tánaiste Leo Varadkar has said that he regrets not calling an Easter election, as he believes he may have had a better result for his Fine Gael party.
The February general elections saw Fine Gael, Fianna Fáil and Sinn Féin end in a near-dead draw, and sparked months of negotiations to form a government.
Mr. Varadkar, speaking at a virtual event organized by the Washington Ireland Program, was reflecting on the year 2020 when he made his comments.
“Had [calling an Easter election] If it had happened, we would have had the elections after the pandemic and maybe it would have been a little better for me and my party, ”he said.
“We may have had a different election result and, in my opinion, one that would have been better for the country,” he told the event, which was also attended by US Senator Chris Murphy and Jen O’Malley Dillon, campaign manager for The presidency. -Choose Joe Biden.
The Tánaiste said he thought Irish politics was becoming increasingly polarized with social media playing a “big role” in that.
“The wrong end of the stick, an inaccurate story, one side of the story can become an accepted fact and truth in a matter of hours, because things are not mediated, they are just posted on social media,” he said . .
The Washington Ireland Program event was organized to launch 2021 applications for the transatlantic internship program of which Mr. Varadkar is an alumnus.
