Fermanagh GAA is mourning the tragic death of former intercountry footballer Shane O’Brien.
O’Brien’s time with the Fermanagh colors ended early when he traveled abroad to work with the United Nations.
He passed away following a car accident in Pretoria, South Africa, where he lived and worked with the United Nations Refugee Agency, according to reports.
“It is with a deep sense of shock and sadness that we learn of Shane O’Brien’s tragic death at the Erne Gaels Club,” a statement from Fermanagh GAA reads.
“Shane was a member of the Fermanagh Minor team that reached the Ulster final in 2003 and a member of the Fermanagh Senior Football team in 2009.
“Shane also won a Corn na nÓg title in 1999 with St Michael’s, Enniskillen and a MacRory Cup in 2002.
“Our condolences to the O’Brien family at this time.
“At the right hand of God was his soul.”

His club Erne Gaels Belleek also paid him a heartfelt tribute: “We are devastated to learn of the sudden passing of Shane O’Brien (SOB).
“When the news broke yesterday, the entire Belleek & Mulleek club and community were shocked and saddened to learn of Shane’s tragic passing.
“Loving son of Siobhan and Tommy. Our hearts go out to Shane’s parents and the entire O’Brien & Smith family.
“Shane played club soccer and hurling with Erne Gaels and county soccer with Fermanagh over the years until his work took him around the world. Whenever Shane came home over the years, he kept up with club football.
“We will keep Siobhan, Tommy and Shane’s family and friends in our thoughts for the days and weeks to come.
“The sky has won another Bright Star. Sleep well Shane.”
