Gardai arrested a man in connection with an elaborate puppy scam that paid 165,000 euros.
In June this year, Gardai issued a warning to the public in connection with a phishing email that allegedly came from the Courts Service, where people were told that they had been selected for jury duty.
More than 70 people responded to this fraudulent message and provided personal information.
The data was used to make fraudulent requests for PUP payments and resulted in the payment of more than € 165,000.
Gardai made an arrest in Cork today in connection with the investigation, and the man could be held for up to 24 hours.
A Garda spokesperson said: “Gardaí attached to the Department of Labor Affairs and Social Protection, together with the Garda National Office for Economic Crimes and the local Gardaí in Cork identified and arrested a suspect today, Tuesday 8th December 2020.
“He is currently detained under the provisions of Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act 1984 at Midleton Garda Station. He may be detained for up to 24 hours.
