Iarnród Éireann has said that passengers will need to book their tickets in advance if they want to travel on intercity rail services between Friday, December 18, and Wednesday, January 6.
The company says that with travel restrictions eased during Christmas and New Years, only 50% of seats will be available on trains.
It says the move will ensure that capacity is managed effectively.
It will also provide “railway customers with a safe and hygienic travel environment during the Christmas and New Year period,” the company added.
Tickets can be booked in advance on the Iarnród Éireann website.
Iarnród Éireann’s corporate communications manager, Barry Kenny, said that if customers arrive at the stations without a pre-booked ticket, they will be turned away.
If people have existing tickets, such as open returns or free travel tickets, they can also book their reservations in advance, free of charge, on the website, he added.
Kenny said that it is traditionally a very busy time to travel and that the pre-booking system will allow Irish Rail to effectively manage the available capacity on trains and ensure a safe and hygienic environment for travelers on trains, in accordance with the regulations of Covid.
