An Australian surfer has recounted how he managed to paddle back to shore and walk hundreds of meters to seek help after being attacked by a great white shark.
The 29-year-old said he had been enjoying a “normal days surfing” yesterday on Kangaroo Island, off the southern coast of Australia, when he had the feeling of “being hit by a truck” on his left side.
The surfer said in a statement: “He bit my back, butt and elbow and tore a chunk off my board.
“I could see the shark as it broke loose and disappeared.”
Police said a member of the public took the man from D’Estrees Bay and was met by paramedics as he made his way to the island’s main town, Kingscote.

The ambulance leader, Michael Rushby, told Nine News that he helped stabilize the man, who suffered from “severe lacerations” before organizing an emergency airlift to the mainland.
South Australian police said the man’s injuries are not believed to be life-threatening.
“I feel incredibly lucky and grateful, and I am optimistic that I will make a full recovery,” the man said in his statement.
There have been eight fatal shark attacks in Australian waters so far this year, according to statistics kept by the Taronga Conservation Society Australia.
