A man who died in a fire in County Dublin on Saturday night has been named locally as a Cork native.
Gardaí is investigating the circumstances of the deaths of two people following a fatal fire at a house in Portmarnock.
The couple have been named locally as Michael and Beatrice Hurley, according to the Irish Examiner.
Now it has emerged that Michael was originally from Mayfield in Cork City.
Tonight the Portmarnock squash club posted on Facebook:
“It is with great sadness that we informed you of the untimely deaths of Mick and Beatrice Hurley last night at their home in Portmarnock.
“A true Cork gentleman, Mick loved his pints and he loved his pumpkin. Our hearts go out to his five children who are left behind on this tragic occasion.”
Hurley was a founding member of the Portmarnock Sports and Leisure Club (PSLC) in the early 1980s.
He was described as “a vital part of the growing pumpkin community in the area” and “a true gentleman from Cork.”
The two had lived in the house for more than 40 years.
Gardaí in Malahide is investigating all the circumstances surrounding the couple’s death.
At approximately 10.30pm last night, Gardaí was alerted to a house fire in Beach Park, Portmarnock, Co. Dublin. The fire was controlled by the Dublin fire brigade and two bodies were discovered inside the house. Death was pronounced in the place shortly after.
Gardaí investigators have preserved the scene as they work to establish the cause of the fire. The bodies were taken to the Dublin City Morgue, Whitehall, where the state pathologist will conduct a post mortem examination in due course.
The results of the autopsy and a technical examination of the scene will determine the course of the Garda investigation.
