Green and red voltage surge

MAYONNAISE

David Clarke 7/10

His two early stops of Michael Quinlivan and Conor Sweeney may have deflated Tipp a bit. He stood tall when it mattered, aside from a punt that led to a free kick and a fumble that nearly led to a Premier goal. In his kicks he encountered a Mayo man most of the time, although some of his restarts put the receiver in difficult situations.

Oisín Mullin 8/10

Mullin’s physique and athleticism back into view. Mayo has a habit of producing excellent defenders who carry the ball and Kilmaine’s man is a perfect fit for that project. I had a part to play in creating half a dozen scores.

Chris Barrett 7/10

He’ll be disappointed that Tipp came in for three goals, but he played his part in keeping the Quinlivan / Sweeney threat quiet. He was called to the ground in 47 minutes.

Lee Keegan 6.5 / 10

He took a black card for taking down Michael Quinlivan at the edge of the plaza. Overall, he did a good job curbing the threat from the Clonmel Commercials player. He will seek to impose himself more on matters when the final arrives. It wasn’t his best afternoon at the office.

Patrick Durcan 6.5 / 10

He dropped a couple of short efforts as he got close to Tipp’s goal, though he contributed a point. Decisive tenacious approach to turn around the opposition.

Stephen Coen 6/10

You’ll be disappointed that you didn’t shut down some of Tipp’s trailers. Still, he couldn’t blame his effort, and he was often the go-to man for Clarke’s short kicks.

Eoghan McLaughlin 6.5 / 10

He received a yellow card at first, but again, as has been the case in previous games, he is a dynamo in his pushes on the field. Helped set up some scores. A lot of honest effort, although he suffered a knee injury when he was substituted after 55 minutes.

Conor Loftus 7/10

The Crossmolina native isn’t so much of a rookie anymore, but he’s certainly carving a niche for himself in midfield. Won many playoffs today, but will be disappointed in the lead-up to Brian Fox’s goal. Good preparation before facing more formidable opponents on December 19.

Mateo Ruane 7/10

It was delivered a couple of times at first, but it settled admirably on its assignment and kicked a good point in the process.

Kevin McLoughlin 8/10

Another afternoon where McLoughlin took his expected turn. Probing runs and diagonal runs caused Tipp more than a few problems. I got on the scoreboard and he was about to raise a green flag.

Ryan O’Donoghue 7.5 / 10

Firm, if not spectacular, display of the Belmullet clubman. Another one of those players who brings an extra dimension and energy to the Green and Red attack. Difficult as he tried to loosen the ball from his grip and his pace caused Tipp a lot of trouble.

Diarmuid O’Connor 7/10

Tiger performance, using a green flag. There’s more to him and despite being called out in the second half, he’ll be eager to make the required impression against the Dubs early on.

Tommy Conroy 9/10

One of the finds of the year. So cool on the ball and equally skilled in aerial battles, despite being small in stature. He helped himself to 0-04, but you look at him and you think this guy is a smart footballer. Add a dimension to the front midline that was lacking in previous seasons.

Aidan O’Shea 7/10

He created numerous turnovers and was quite eloquent in urging his teammates to push up. He was instrumental in creating his team’s second goal and was again the chief orchestrator in creating space for those around him.

Cillian O’Connor 10/10

A jaw-dropping tally of 4-09 by the man from Ballintubber, as he did a lot to talk nonsense that he’s not a marquee forward. He was infallible with the balls set and two of his goals came from Tipperary errors, highlighting a clinical efficacy. He was called ashore later when he finished his work. A no-brainer in naming him Man of the Match.

Substitutes

Jordan Flynn 6/10

He showed some racing moments when he came in for Diarmuid O’Connor, although he didn’t do enough to justify a starting position in the final.

Padraig O’Hora 5/10

He made a great defensive block with his head.

Michael Plunkett 4/10

He came in for the injured Eoghan McLaughlin and was flayed a couple of times in his midrunner position.

Tom Parsons 4/10
Good to see the Charlestown player involved after his injury horror.

Darren Coen 5/10

He showed himself well when he came in for Cillian O’Connor, kicking two fine points.

TYPPERARY

Evan Comerford 5/10

He could have done better to stop Mayo’s third goal and struggled when Mayo pushed on his first-half restarts. He was more confident with his kicks in the second half. Saw his effort from a wide 45 drift.

Alan Campbell 5/10

Tommy Conroy turned it around early, though he finally settled for his task. One of Tipp’s defenders who will feel like he made at least one honest change.

Jimmy Feehan 5/10

The winger’s effort saw him cut for a goal near the end, although his confrontation with Aidan O’Shea was effectively a no contest.

Colm O’Shaughnessy 4/10

I tried in vain to keep an eye on Cillian O’Connor and she suspects that it affected her confidence. However, he defiantly pressed on.

Bill Maher 5.5 / 10

One of the most energetic Tipp artists, Launching attacks that another day might have resulted in green flags if his colleagues’ radar was on.

Kevin Fahey 5/10
Another of Tipp’s rear guard who fought under Mayo’s onslaught in the first half. He got on the scoreboard with a late point.

Robbie Kiely 5/10

A lot of honest effort, although it wasn’t a surprise when he was called ashore in the water break of the second half.

Steven O’Brien 5/10

He coughed up the possession that led to Mayo’s second goal. He missed a great opportunity to raise a green flag himself when Mayo was cut in 55 minutes.

Liam Casey 4/10

A failed pass led Mayo to his third goal. He never really got going and was substituted at halftime.

Colin O’Riordan 5.5 / 10

He didn’t really have the impact we hoped for, despite setting up one of the many scoring chances his team had. He still kicked more than two points from long range.

Michael Quinlivan 5/10

Frustrating afternoon that started when he missed an early scoring opportunity. Any other day I could have hit the net three times.

Conal Kennedy 5.5 / 10

A good fielder for the ball and that became evident again today. Helped set up Conor Sweeney’s goal.

Brian Fox 4.5 / 10

It only lasted 35 minutes, the highlight being Tipp’s early goal scorer that offered hope for a close competition. However, it will not be.

Conor Sweeney 7/10

He contributed on 9/1, but will be disappointed that his overall game did not perform better. Yet impeccable by the balls placed,

Colman Kennedy 4/10

I had a hard time making a good impression and they called me ashore just before time.

Substitutions

Emmet Moloney 4/10

Came into halftime for Liam Casey.

Phillip Austin 4/10

He tried hard in the second period instead of Brian Fox.

Paudie Feehan 3/10

I had a hard time making a good impression last quarter.

Liam Boland 3/10

Another sub who was ready when he introduced himself.

Dáire Brennan 5/10

He put his hand on the ball when he showed up for the last 10 minutes.
