GARDAI arrested two men and impounded two vehicles in connection with alleged dangerous driving in Limerick on Saturday.
Gardaí was on the N24 Tipperary road shortly before 8 am, where they noticed a group of vehicles involved in what was believed to be a grumpy race. When Gardaí approached these vehicles, two of them sped away.
Both cars sped through the town of Caherconlish as Gardaí followed them from a safe distance. The remaining units from the Garda station on Roxboro Road spoke with everyone present on Tipperary Road and an investigation is under way into this matter.
The two vehicles that left the scene were located in Caherconlish shortly thereafter and two men, both in their 30s, were arrested. They were taken to the Roxboro Road garda station, where they are currently detained under section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act 1984.
Speaking at the Garda station on Roxboro Road, Superintendent Dermot O Connor said: “The Gardaí in Limerick City have been particularly vigilant regarding horses that are not being kept under proper control or where they are being neglected or abused.
“Grumpy races on a public road are illegal and dangerous for all road users and can put horses under tremendous stress. Gardaí will investigate all dangerous incidents, illegal grumpy races and where animals are being mistreated “
