Two attempts by Keith Earls and an additional score by Cian Healy saw Ireland clinch third place in the Fall Nations Cup thanks to a 31-16 win over Scotland in Dublin.

Ireland captain Johnny Sexton recorded two penalties and two conversions in the victory, while replacement Ross Byrne added three more points from the tee.

Scotland started well, with rookie Jaco van der Walt kicking 11 points in the test, while an attempt by Duhan van der Merwe in the second half kept Gregor Townsend’s charges in touch.

However, the hosts were ultimately too strong at the Aviva Stadium, as their higher power was crucial.
