GARDAÍ AND THE NORTHERN IRELAND POLICE are conducting a cross-border operation targeting criminals and drunk drivers during the Christmas period.
Operation Season’s Greetings will see PSNI officers across the border counties working alongside the Gardaí.
Starting today, the operation will take place day and night for the next few weeks.
PSNI Chief Superintendent Andy Freeburn said the operation aims to prevent crime, as well as driving under the influence of alcohol and drugs.
“We appreciate that things are very different for all of us this year with the current pandemic, yet our commitment to building safe communities remains,” Freeburn said.
“Police officers from departments across the service will provide visible and accessible surveillance to local communities and businesses throughout the area,” he said.
“We will also work in partnership with An Garda Siochana, carrying out joint operations to help provide safer streets for shopping and socializing, as allowed by Health Protection Regulations, safer roads and public transport, safer homes. for those at risk of domestic abuse and safer businesses.
“There will be a greater police presence, with authorized checkpoints as part of our part of the operation against the consumption of alcoholic beverages and the driving of drugs, but our goal is to keep any disruption to a minimum by regularly moving through the area.”
Freeburn said officers will conduct patrols and provide crime prevention advice to local businesses.
“Our ultimate goal is to keep everyone safe, but also to deny criminals the use of our road network,” he added.
“We will also continue our approach to the four Es of the Health Protection Regulations to engage, explain, encourage and, as a last resort, enforce, those who recklessly ignore the rules.”
