Ireland is truly in the midst of a cold snap, with temperatures plummeting reaching every corner of the map and some counties starting to see snow.
And we may have to wait a bit before there is any improvement in temperature, with Met Eireann predicting that freezing conditions will last until the middle of next week.
A spokesman for the forecaster said it is likely to be very cold “until the middle of the week”, adding that we are likely to see some “frost at night” as well as periods of cold sunshine during the day.
There is a risk of frost and ice, as well as the threat of freezing fog in parts of the country, until next Wednesday.
Then, and only then, will things start to look up, with Met Eireann looking towards a day that will start out cold before the fog clears on a day that will be “bright and mostly dry in the east” and warmer in the south and the West. .
The coldest conditions will come Sunday night, when temperatures will drop to minus three at night.
Turning to this weekend, tomorrow we will likely see torrential rain in the western coastal counties, while it will remain mostly dry in the inland counties.
The cold weather forecast comes after Met Eireann issued a yellow state wind warning for the entire country this morning.
The advisory began at 11 am this morning and will be in effect until 6 am on Saturday morning.
The forecaster said on his website: “Strong north winds today will blow up to 100 km / h with a slight risk of coastal flooding.”
The day came when it snowed in many parts of the country.
The national forecaster said: “Widespread frost this morning and frozen patches on untreated surfaces. Dry in the east with sunny periods, frequent rains affect the western half of the country.”
