Former astronaut commander Chris Hadfield appeared on The Late Late Show to surprise six-year-old Adam King.
Adam, who has brittle bones, was one of the stars of the RTÉ Late Late Toy Show on Friday night last week.
He expressed interest in being a capsule commander (Capcom) because his condition meant he couldn’t be an astronaut.
His appearance caught the attention of Commander Hadfield, who flew two missions on the space shuttle and was commander of the International Space Station in 2013 when he tweeted on St. Patrick’s Day: “Maidin mhaith from the International Space Station! Happy St. Patrick’s Day to the Irish around the world. “
His daughter was studying at Trinity College Dublin at the time and has since become a regular visitor to Ireland.
On Friday, Adam was back on the Late Late Show, this time via Zoom when he was linked to Commander Hadfield.
Commander Hadfield first spoke to host Ryan Tubridy and told him how Adam had caught his eye:
“There was a great response on social media, just for the type of person who [Adam] it is. He immediately lit up with ‘hey Commander Hadfield, you have to meet this kid’ so I replied that I would love to and comment on the kind of person he is, and he was obviously not alone. in [thinking] that. It has been very nice to see and have a more direct contact with Adam and his family. “
Commander Hadfield told him that he had also been Capcom for the space shuttle missions.
“Capcom is a fascinating job, you are in the center, it is like a mystery, constantly solving things. You have to trust your own ability and the ability of the people around you, ”he explained.
“That kind of environment, it seems to me that he [Adam] could prosper. Perhaps the most important thing now [aged 6] It inspires you in this moment to pursue things that you might never have felt the freedom to pursue otherwise and that may be just as important.
“Sure, he will end up doing something excellent with his life, but the process and the inspiration I think is very important and that is part of the reflection that I really like to see too.
Commander Hadfield asked Adam where he was going on his imaginary space missions, to which Adam replied, “Sometimes I go to the moon and other times to other places, like different planets.”
Commander Hadfield replied: “I don’t know if you know, but I have two brothers and two sisters and when I was your age, we did exactly the same thing, we dreamed of flying in space.
“The great thing about Adam is that when I grew up, I had the opportunity to fly in space, three times. It’s amazing what can happen in life, and I was Capcom. “
