Met Eireann issues immediate 19-hour warning for 26 counties as dangerous snow and winds are forecast

Met Eireann has issued a yellow wind status warning for the entire country today.

The notice begins at 11 am this morning and will be in effect until 6 am on Saturday morning.

The forecaster says on his website: “Strong north winds today will blow up to 100 km / h with a slight risk of coastal flooding.”

This comes on a day when snow has already been falling in many parts of the country and freezing conditions are forecast throughout the weekend.

The national forecaster said: “Widespread frosts this morning and frozen patches on untreated surfaces. Dry in the east with sunny periods, frequent rains affect the western half of the country.”

“More persistent rains will spread south across the country in the afternoon, becoming intense at times and wintry on high ground. Increasingly windy, with strong and gusty north winds, afternoon temperatures of 3 to 5 degrees. They will go up to between 5 and 8 later tonight.

“This afternoon and tonight there will be wind, with outbreaks of torrential rain, clearer conditions, with scattered rains, will gradually spread from the east. Overnight temperatures of 4 to 6 degrees with cool to strong north winds, which will decrease in most parts in the morning.

“A drier day on Saturday in most places, with better insolation, it will remain quite cloudy throughout the Atlantic counties and in eastern Leinster with torrential rains continuing there for a while.

“Afternoon temperatures of 5 to 7 degrees, with mostly moderate winds from north to northeast, strong for a time on the west and south coasts, and then decrease later.”
