Covid-19 Ireland: HSE Head Says Hugging At Christmas Poses ‘Extreme Risk’

HSE boss Paul Reid doesn’t want hugs for Christmas.

The head of the health agency is urging people to refrain from hugging when they are with loved ones to help keep the spread of Covid in check for the next month.

It is a case of Mr. Reid’s Bah ‘hug’bug, as he believes that hugging represents “extreme risk” when people meet.

His advice will be a bitter disappointment to the millions of people who are waiting to hug their loved ones as the closing for Christmas eases.

Mr. Reid spoke at the HSE weekly operational briefing at St Steeven’s Hospital (CORR) in Dublin on Thursday afternoon.

He said: “This week when gourmet restaurants and pubs reopen, it’s a great opportunity for people to get together with friends and family, it gives them some relief after what has been a challenging few weeks and a very challenging year.

“Likewise, we encourage everyone to maintain their highest level of guard at all stages while gathering.

“It’s not just about meeting up in restaurants, but about people traveling to restaurants and going together when, understandably, people’s guard can drop, maybe after a glass or two of wine.

“Or maybe as people leave and don’t see each other at Christmas, our natural feeling is to hug each other and wish each other a merry Christmas, which we know is an extreme risk in today’s environment.”
