Limerick is sweating from sniper Aaron Gillane’s fitness ahead of Ireland’s pitching final against Waterford on Sunday week.
The forward and pitcher was substituted at the end of the semi-final victory over Galway after a heavy collision with Galway center back Gearóid McInerney.
Gillane celebrated on the Croke Park field with his teammates at the final whistle last Sunday, but later complained of back pain in the locker room and was transferred to Mater Hospital in Dublin, where he spent the night.
Coach Donal O’Grady told RTÉ Sport today that Gillane was rated “50-50” to start next week, and would be retested by county medical staff prior to training tomorrow.
O’Grady said Gillane had suffered severe bruising and had some breathing difficulties after the game, but that he had been released from Mater Hospital on Monday and attended a team meeting midweek.
“They held him overnight as a precaution,” O’Grady said. “They were a little worried. But he was released the next day, which was great.
“He came to see us Tuesday night, but he obviously didn’t train. Hopefully we know more by the weekend.
“We hope they possibly re-evaluate him on Friday night, to see how he is doing. At the moment, I understand 50-50.”
O’Grady said he would expect Gillane to play if possible and revealed that Patrickswell’s man was also playing with a tied finger, having damaged ligaments earlier in the season, but a hamstring injury had resolved. beginning of the year.
“It should have possibly taken a couple of weeks to get into that recovery,” O’Grady said of the hand injury.
“But he really wanted to get in shape and get his shots back as quickly as possible. And he basically played through the pain barrier.
“He’s playing with that little tied finger, but he’s not a tougher man than him.
“He takes a lot of punishments inside at the edge of the plaza. However, he’s very capable of taking care of himself, which is great.”
Na Piarsaigh forward David Dempsey is ready to return to training after missing the victory over Galway with a hamstring injury.
