Dublin Bus is implementing a new 24 hour bus route. The 39th, which runs between Ongar and UCD, is the third 24-hour service announced by the company.
The 39th will now operate 24 hours a day, seven days a week, with one every 30 minutes between 11.30 p.m. and 5 a.m. Bus routes 15 and 41 have been operating 24 hours since December 2019.
There will also be “significant improvements” on seven bus routes (1, 9, 13, 14, 39, 40 and 83), Dublin Bus said Thursday.
“The improvements to the new service, which include 824 additional departures per week, are the result of an investment of 4.9 million euros, provided by the National Transportation Authority (NTA),” he said.
The funding was made available through the government’s stimulus plan in July and will lead to the creation of 80 additional jobs.
Dublin Bus said 24-hour services facilitate increased employment in the nighttime economy as businesses extend their opening hours, create 24-hour airport connections, and reduce nighttime carbon emissions by encouraging people to take the bus instead of traveling by car.
Transport Minister Eamon Ryan said that while Ireland awaits a post-Covid future, “it is important that we provide resources to our public transport system for recovery.”
“These new services will give passengers more choice and more flexibility and will also see the creation of 80 new jobs,” he said.
Anne Graham, executive director of the National Transport Authority, said the way Dublin works as a city has changed and “it is no longer the case that the city closes at 11 or 12 at night.”
“We believe that improvements like these, along with the revised bus network in Dublin, and investment in our bus corridor infrastructure under BusConnects, will bring the kind of improvements that people expect in a modern city,” he said.
Ray Coyne, CEO of Dublin Bus, said that “our public transport service must reflect the changing needs of customers and these changes will bring the many benefits of public transport to more people and businesses, including mobility, safety, sustainability and inclusion “.
