We count the contents of a can of Quality Street and the Irish will not be happy

December has arrived and everything related to Christmas will dominate our lives.

The Advent calendars have started, the GAA season is almost over, and the chocolate cans provide snacks 24 hours a day for many people.

But those who opt for a Quality Street tub might be a bit frustrated after a chocolate fanatic counted the number of each variety inside, labeling the finds “another hit for 2020.”

After seeing the UK fury online, we decided to count how many sweets were in a 650 gram box collected from a local shop in Dublin.

There were 67 sweets in all, but only five of the undoubtedly most delicious purples.

It might annoy some people that there are only three from the candy swirl and four from the green triangle in this box.

There were six orange chocolate crisps and eight orange cream.

For fans of strawberry treats, there were eight of those and four blocks of milk chocolate.

But it seems every Quality Street box is different, with some similar trends.

Across the pond, Stephen Hull, director of digital at ITV News, found that the can he bought contained a total of 85 chocolates.

Stephen’s tweet has amassed over 30,000 likes and sparked fierce debate as he wrote: “I have a bit of free time today so I audited the unopened Quality Street can.

“Only 4 purples (4.7%) and yet 11 (12.9%) huge oranges. Another blow for 2020. Who am I complaining to? #Inequalitystreet.”

Others wanted to check the operation for themselves, with @Tatedavies adding your own calculations to the report. He found that the purple and green triangle were back in the least amount, and that the chocolate strawberry was the most abundant.

He replied: “I just did the same, to check the consumer variation. I have 7.5% purple and 11.9%. Interesting, but since I don’t like walnuts, I’m happy with the proportions.”

The chocolate audit left some rage, as one responded, “That’s all wrong. Orange creams shouldn’t even be in the mix, let alone stage a bloody takeover.”

A second wrote: “They both seem very low in the green triangles. To my knowledge, they have been underrepresented for 60 years or more. You have to get in fast if they are your favorites.”

Another commented, “That many candy pennies is the biggest misfortune here,” while others said they would be delighted with the result.

Quality Street even responded with its own peace offer, informing Stephen that he can now purchase custom tins with a selection of his choice, with the ability to choose a full can of a single variety of chocolate if he wishes, which is very tempting .
