Ceann Comhairle has told DUP leader Arlene Foster that a tweet by TD Brian Stanley of Sinn Féin will require “a credible political response.”
However, Seán Ó Fearghaíl said that while he was “personally shocked and deeply shocked by its content,” no action would need to be taken if the tweet is directed by Stanley.
Stanley tweeted equating two historic IRA attacks on the British Army, the Kilmichael ambush in 1920 and the Warrenpoint ambush in 1979.
He has since apologized and deleted the tweet, enraging Ms Foster into sending a letter to the Oireachtas.
In his response, Ó Fearghaíl says that Stanley’s tweet was wrong and was below the standards of public representatives.
“Like many political representatives from the North and South, I was personally shocked and deeply shocked by its content.
“As elected representatives, I believe we have a shared responsibility to respectfully address the legacy of the past, promote reconciliation, and support victims and their families.
“I know you will agree that it is an enormous privilege to serve as an elected representative and, in particular, to hold a position of responsibility, yet we all have a duty to uphold the fundamental values and standards that are the cornerstone of democracy. politics.
“I must be particularly aware of the independent and non-partisan nature of my position.
“However, I believe that the statement on Twitter made by Congressman Stanley calls for a credible political response, one that sincerely acknowledges the pain and offense inflicted on families.”
Mr. O Fearghail says he knows that Mr. Stanley is “an experienced and impartial member of the Dáil Éireann” but says the matter should “be properly addressed”.
Mr. Stanley will address his colleagues on the Public Accounts Committee, which he chairs tomorrow.
