The LGFA looked at Portlaoise and Thurles before deciding on Parnell Park for this weekend’s Irish semi-final between Cork and Galway after the LIT Gaelic Grounds was unavailable due to a senior hurling team training session in Limerick .
Yesterday it was revealed that the semi-final would take place at Parnell Park, rather than Limerick as originally proposed, and that the service is at 1.30pm on Sunday.
A Limerick county board official confirmed to the Irish Examiner today that a training session for Limerick’s senior pitchers (within a week of their last All-Ireland pitching meeting with Waterford) was the reason for the change of venue.
The county board official said it was made clear to LGFA officials that Limerick pitchers would take priority over the women’s soccer semifinal if they needed to use the field.
The LGFA was aware of the terms of this agreement in advance.
RTÉ Sport understands that Limerick pitchers will train from approximately 11 am to 2 pm
The LGFA had originally considered O’Moore Park or Semple Stadium as alternative venues, but the latter was deemed unsatisfactory due to management issues.
Parnell Park was eventually offered as an alternate venue, as the distance involved in the journey, especially for the Cork team, was similar to Portlaoise, and the ground is now set to host the Ireland youth final between Fermanagh and Wicklow on Saturday at 4pm .
The winners of the Cork-Galway match will face Dublin in the Irish final at Croke Park on December 20, with the capital’s team aiming to clinch four titles in a row.
