At least two people died and many others were injured after a car crashed into them in a pedestrian zone in a German city.

The driver of the car has been arrested, Trier city police said as the force urged people to stay away from the area.

Local police and the mayor, Wolfram Leibe, confirmed the deaths of two people.

Police have not stated whether it is being treated as a terrorist incident, reports Mirror UK.

Public broadcaster SWR reported that the driver had been detained by police, adding that the details of the incident were unclear.

Photos posted online show a body covered by a tarp on a pedestrian street decorated with Christmas lights, while a video clip showed an injured person on the floor next to a store as witnesses called for help.
