An Garda Síochána members will no longer operate checkpoints on motorway and highway routes, it has been announced.
The measure comes as the Gardaí alter their police operations as the country goes from level 5 to level 3 of the Government’s ‘coexistence plan with Covid’ tomorrow.
However, mobile checkpoints in support of more than 100 individual checkpoints on major Irish routes will continue to operate.
Gardaí says the focus of these checkpoints will be inter-county travel.
Members of the public have been asked to remain within the county in which they normally reside until inter-county movement is allowed on December 18.
Gardaí says that they will continue to carry out controls in authorized premises, as well as in urban commercial premises. They also say they will also implement more high visibility patrols focused on the night economy.
Community participation will continue to be a particular focus of gardaí; They say it will continue to support vulnerable members of the public and those who may feel isolated and alone during the Christmas season.

Speaking today, Commissioner Drew Harris said that people had shown “very good compliance with health councils and regulations” and expected this to continue after the country moved to level 3.
