A man has appeared in a Dublin court charged with the murder of three people.

A murder investigation was launched after post-mortem examination of his remains.

The man, who is around 30 years old, was arrested by Gardaí and charged yesterday afternoon.

He was brought before the Dún Laoghaire District Court this morning.

Detective Sergeant John White presented evidence of arrest, indictment and warning. The detective said he arrested the defendant yesterday at 4:40 p.m. and charged him with the murders. The man, Det Sgt White said, did not respond after a warning.

The detective said that at 4.53pm Sergeant Philip Phibbs charged him with the murder of the first person. He did not respond to the charge.

At 4.55 p.m., the sergeant charged the man with the murder of the second person to whom he did not respond.

The court also heard that at 4.57 pm he also did not respond when he was charged with the murder of the third person.

Bail was not requested, as bail in murder cases can only be granted in Superior Court.

The defendant was represented by attorney Morgan Shelly. Legal aid was granted, but Judge Anne Watkin deferred the decision on legal aid for a lawyer.

“Why would you want one?” He told the attorney who made a provision in the law for the inclusion of an attorney for legal assistance.

“Not in district court,” the judge replied.

The defendant, who was wearing a brown jacket, blue jeans and gray white sneakers, did not speak during the brief hearing. He stood in front of the judge with his hands in his pockets.

Judge Anne Watkin ordered him into custody to appear in Clover Hill District Court next Thursday.

There are reporting restrictions that prohibit the identification of the accused and the deceased.
