A Fine Gael TD apologized for “liking” a social media post that described a female politician as an “ignorant child” for campaigning against the greyhound industry.
Joe Carey, Clare’s TD, said he liked the tweet about Holly Cairns, the TD of the Social Democrats, had been wrong.
Ms. Cairns has been campaigning to cut state funding for the greyhound industry, which she said is cruel.
In 2021, the greyhound industry is expected to get € 19.2 million from the state, including an increase of € 2.4 million.
A post on Twitter criticized Ms. Cairns’ comment against the greyhound industry, saying it was “a waffle from an ignorant girl in a minority party who achieved the 55th count.”
Over the weekend it emerged that Carey had “liked” the tweet.
In a post Monday morning, Fine Gael’s TD said: “I liked a tweet that was disrespectful to one of my fellow TDs. I shouldn’t have. It was wrong and I offer my sincere apologies to Holly Cairns. “
Mr. Carey has previously said that he has an “interest” in greyhound racing. He told Dáil in 2016 that his family also had a great interest and participation in the sport.
Mr. Carey has defended greyhound racing and claimed that an “anti-cursive lobby” has been spreading misinformation.
In response to Mr. Carey’s apology, Ms. Cairns said; I accept Rep. Carey’s apology. The tweet that he liked referring to me as an ‘ignorant child’ was from a member of the Irish Greyhound Board. I think it is important for the Board to clarify its position on this.
“I have been surprised by the great amount of hostility I have received after my call to end state funding for the greyhound industry. It is clear that the only argument they have is to resort to personalized attacks, that says it all about the industry, “he said.
Last week, the Social Democrats tabled a motion that would stop a planned 2.4 million euro funding increase for the greyhound industry and ask the government to instead fund support for rescued dogs from the industry before phase out all state funding for greyhound racing. 2025. The motion was successfully blocked by the government.
Ms. Cairns said her party will continue to campaign against state funding for greyhound racing. The Social Democrats’ TD called greyhound racing a “financial basket case” and a “loss-making industry” that had seen a dramatic drop in attendance and public support.
